Home Modifications for the Visually Impaired:

  • Adapt items with adaptive labels for the visually impaired. For example, add bump dots to a microwave.

  • Add additional lighting. For example, add a task lamp, a floor lamp, and wall lights.

  • Reduce unwanted lighting. For example, add dark colored curtains and dark colored lamp shades.

  • Assess and reduce tripping hazards. For example, create clear walkways and remove rugs that are a tripping hazard.

  • Add textured tape on the edge of steps and to mark an area of interest. For example, add textured tape on the edge of each step and in front of the oven.

  • Adaptive products for the visually impaired. For example, add a talking clock and stovetop burner guards around totally flat electric burners.

  • High contrast color themes with preferred colors. For example, use bright red and black color themes.
