General Safety Techniques:
Wear a hat with a brim to protect from head-level obstacles.
Wear glasses and/or sunglasses to protect the eye area.
Carry a phone and know how to call 911 and others in case of an emergency.
Have a wearable emergency device to use in case of an emergency.
Use open ear headphones to prevent blocking out noises.
Lighting Indoors:
Use a flashlight and/or headlight when moving around.
Use additional lighting along the bottom of walls to shine onto the floor.
Use additional lighting along staircases.
Wear a hat with a brim to block overhead lighting.
Moving Around Indoors Safely:
Use indoor orientation and mobility techniques when moving around.
Keep walkways clear and free of tripping hazards.
Remove rugs or add non-slip pads to rugs.
Add textured or colored tape to the edge of steps, near the top and bottom of stairs, and other areas of safety concern.
Know how to get outside in the event of an emergency.
Kitchen Safety:
Adapt appliances with bump dots, colored or textured tape, or braille labels to ensure accurate usage.
Use adaptive kitchen products for the visually impaired that increase safety such as oven gloves, cut-resistant gloves, finger guards, and liquid level indicators.
Use adaptive kitchen techniques for pouring hot liquids, cutting foods, and checking when meat is cooked properly.
